CNC Milling

In CNC milling, a computer program (often generated from a CAD design) guides the movement of the cutting tools along multiple axes (usually three or more) to achieve the desired shape and dimensions. The cutting tools may include end mills, drills, and other specialized tools, and they remove material in a subtractive manner, gradually shaping the workpiece into the desired form.

CNC milling offers high levels of accuracy, repeatability, and versatility, making it suitable for producing components with intricate geometries, tight tolerances, and fine surface finishes. It’s widely used across industries such as manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, electronics, and more, for applications ranging from prototypes and one-off parts to large-scale production runs.

Understanding Milling Machine Complexity

Simpler parts made for general use might not need very exact measurements or a super smooth surface. But if the design is intricate, it will usually need more precise milling. Milling machines can have 3, 4, or 5 axes.

3-axis machines are common and can cut up and down (Z-axis) and sideways (X and Y). However, they can’t easily make certain shapes like undercuts. These need a more special kind of machine. The 4-axis machine is fancier. It can also spin like a lathe.

5-axis milling machines include rotation in both the X and Y-axis. They are the most complete milling machines available and are implemented for highly complex designs such as medical devices and implants for the medical industry, impellers and aerospace structures.

CNC Milling Capabilities of 5Dtech

of 5Dtech has more than 70 precision CNC equipment, which involves a great number of tool types, including three-axis, four-axis, and five-axis machining centers, drilling and tapping centers, CNC lathes, and more than 10 ordinary machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, drilling machines, and grinders. The equipment has an annual processing capacity of up to one million pieces.

Our innovative CNC milling and drilling technology offers live tooling capabilities, a large work envelope, and automatic pallet changers for added manufacturing efficiency.

Tolerance

Tightest tolerance: ±.0008’’ (0.020 mm) Tighter tolerances are examined on a case by case basis with your technical drawings. Kintech’s CNC machining service can produce CNC parts with tolerance as low as ± 0.0002 in. Without a drawing, all CNC parts are produced to our ISO 2768 medium standard. We can also machine to tighter tolerances, ±0.025mm or ±0.001″, with an attached engineering drawing calling out critical features.
